Transfems in Fiction and Agency

Posted and last updated in December 2024

Epistemic status: It's a tweet thread I fired off based on some observations.

Content warning for: allusions to kink writing

i know transfems have represented themselves in fiction with no agency for ages - just in this online circle recently we have dolls, mechpilots, maids. but i hope as we learn to assert ourselves, we can write and speak to new archetypes, with more agency/power than literally zero

i think a lot about umineko’s idea of witches. they have lots of power but not necessarily agency. but to paraphrase the game, even when they are unable to change their current misfortune they do not simply accept it but create happiness despite it. you can write lots about that!

i dont think people should write it if it isnt genuine, but i hope we can get to the point where people can genuinely write about more than having everything about you dictated by others. what im saying is we need more beatrices. (TL note: beatrice can also mean “vriska serket”)

you know how we have had so many memes like “girl dinner” which reinforce misogynistic ideas but people use them anyway? same thing with so much of our writing. ES/HDG/stuff like that has its place but we deserve to see ourselves in media where we act, not only are acted upon
